Surprised By Joy, C.S. Lewis

Subtitled "The Shape Of My Early Life", this is the story of Lewis's own conversion, beginning at, as the title suggests, childhood and progressing through school, then to Oxford during his adult years. It is, naturally, autobiographical in many ways though it is not intended to be treated purely as such. He describes the "joy" gleaned from his aesthetic appreciation of the world around him, his confusion of the desire for particular objects and the influences of certain individuals on his philosophy and how all that eventually lead to his conversion. Amongst other experiences, he writes about his father and his early school experiences, some with dry hilarity.

For those who have not experienced or cannot relate to the experiences he describes, it is potentially difficult to read this book. Still, it is C.S. Lewis; well worth the read and the chuckles it delivers on the way.
