Making Sense Out Of Suffering, Peter Kreeft

The question (problem) of suffering is one of the oldest questions which pretty much everyone who has ever lived would have struggled to make sense of. Kreeft, in his usual lucid simplicity, not only deals with the subject intellectually by appealing to reason but also experience and tradition. He also occasionally switches into his efficacious trademark dialog form of discourse.

The book is structured sensibly, beginning with some "cheap" and "easy" answers before proceeding to methodically examine the "clues" to the answer from philosophers, artists and the prophets before finally converging to Christ. Kreeft also appropriately includes a chapter criticizing on how modern thought (or the lack thereof) makes it difficult for one to understand this mystery.

Making Sense Out Of Suffering is a good book for those who wrestle with this question. Even those who have already learnt some of the "answers" would nonetheless benefit from the reinforcement and encouragement. Obviously, a book on its own can only deal with the problem intellectually - and the author does not claim or attempt to do any more than that - but it certainly does it well.
